Michael Woodwood to direct Twelfth Night

Thursday, 17. March 2011 16:03

GB Theatre Company have great pleasure to present our show director for Twelfth NightMichael Woodwood.

Michael trained as an actor at LAMDA and was last seen in the title role of Titus Andronicus at the Mercury theatre Colchester and Neuss Shakespeare Festival Germany. He is currently Artistic Director for Vital Stages Theatre Company based at the Redbridge Drama Centre and has most recently directed their Christmas show Ramayana, and at the Soho Theatre a version of Chekhov short stories called Love on the Tracks for Big Olive Productions.

“I am extremely delighted to be asked to direct Twelfth Night for GB Theatre Company’s summer Shakespeare tour and I am looking forward to seeing the production set against some of the beautiful venues that have been lined up for this year’s season. Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays and my personal favourite of his comedies, with the hilarious scenes of Sir Toby Belch and Aguecheek matched by the witty wordplay of Viola as she untangles a knot of confusion created by her own disguise. Twelfth Night is a play about love, falling in love, people in love with the idea of love and how love can drive some to madness. The play is a celebration of the finer things of life tinged with the darkness of cruel laughter aimed at the pompous Malvolio. Let there be cakes and ale!”

Neil Sheppeck to direct Romeo & Juliet

Wednesday, 9. March 2011 17:15

GB Theatre Company are delighted to announce the first of the show directors is to be Neil Sheppeck who directed As You Like It for us in 2010. Neil is one of this country’s most exciting young directors and runs his own theatre company Love&Madness.

Neil is the perfect choice to direct Romeo & Juliet because he is so passionate about the play:

“I played Romeo at Drama School and fell in love with the play. I’ve since played Romeo professionally as well as directing the play and am really looking forward to working on it again.”

“Verona, a city torn apart by an endless struggle between two feuding families, is left seeking salvation. Amongst a brutality beyond memory, grows a love beyond existence.”

“I love Romeo and Juliet because the play deals with love conquering hate. The two lovers are surrounded by an anger and aggression that has lost all reason. Juliet and Romeo’s love for one another proves stronger than this loathing. It is the catalyst for the laying down of arms, and leads both households towards a new era of tolerance.”
